The short answer
An EMI (equated monthly instalment) turns one big card purchase into fixed monthly payments. It's useful when you need something now and can't pay in full. But the monthly number hides the real price. Interest, fees, VAT and a blocked card limit only show up when you add everything together — which is what this guide does.
The 6 hidden costs of a credit-card EMI
1. Interest that's quoted per month
A rate like "1.42% per month" sounds tiny. Multiply by 12 and it's 17% a year. Always convert to an annual rate before comparing offers.
2. Flat rate vs reducing balance
With a reducing-balance rate you pay interest only on what you still owe. With a flat rate, interest is charged on the full original amount for the whole tenure. On ৳60,000 over 36 months, 17% reducing costs ৳17,010 in interest, but 17% flat would cost ৳30,600 — about 80% more for the "same" rate. Ask which one your offer uses.
3. Processing fee, plus VAT on the fee
Many EMI conversions charge a one-time processing fee, usually a percentage of the amount, and VAT (commonly 15%) is added on top of that fee. It's charged once, often on your next statement, so it's easy to miss.
4. "0% EMI" that isn't quite zero
A 0% plan can still carry a processing fee and VAT. Some shops also offer 0% EMI only at the full price, while people paying upfront get a cash discount. That lost discount is part of the cost.
5. A smaller card limit
Banks usually block the outstanding EMI amount against your credit limit. Convert ৳60,000 on a ৳1,00,000 limit and you may only have about ৳40,000 left for everything else until instalments are paid down.
6. Early settlement and late payment
Paying off early may carry an early-settlement fee. Missing an instalment can bring a late fee and interest, and can affect your credit record. Know both before you sign.
Worked example: a ৳60,000 phone, three ways
Nadia, a 27-year-old designer in Dhaka, wants a ৳60,000 phone and has three options. The rates and fees are examples, chosen to show how the costs work.
| Pay in full | "0%" EMI, 12 months | EMI at 17%, 36 months | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly payment | — | ৳5,000 | ৳2,139 |
| Interest | ৳0 | ৳0 | ৳17,010 |
| Processing fee | ৳0 | ৳900 (1.5%) | ৳600 (1%) |
| VAT on fee (15%) | ৳0 | ৳135 | ৳90 |
| Total you pay | ৳60,000 | ৳61,035 | ৳77,700 |
| Extra cost | ৳0 | ৳1,035 (1.7%) | ৳17,700 (29.5%) |
The 36-month plan has the smallest monthly payment — and the largest total: Nadia pays ৳17,700 more, about 29% of the phone's price. That's the hidden cost most people never see, because they only ever look at the ৳2,139 a month.
How tenure changes the cost
Same ৳60,000, same 17% a year, different lengths (interest only, before fees):
| Tenure | Monthly | Interest | Extra vs price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 months | ৳10,502 | ৳3,010 | 5.0% |
| 12 months | ৳5,472 | ৳5,667 | 9.4% |
| 24 months | ৳2,967 | ৳11,197 | 18.7% |
| 36 months | ৳2,139 | ৳17,010 | 28.3% |
Going from 12 to 36 months cuts the instalment by ৳3,333 a month, but triples the interest. If you can afford a shorter tenure, it's almost always cheaper.

Five questions to ask before you convert
- What is the annual interest rate, and is it flat or reducing balance?
- Is there a processing fee, and is VAT charged on it?
- What is the total amount I will repay, in taka?
- How much of my credit limit will be blocked, and for how long?
- What does it cost to settle early, and what happens if I miss an instalment?
Track every EMI so none of it stays hidden
The hardest part of EMIs isn't the maths — it's remembering how many you have, what each really costs and when each one ends. That's what Rabit Ledger was built for.
Convert to EMI
- See the real cost before you commit. When you convert a card purchase to EMI, Rabit Ledger shows total payable, total interest, the processing fee and the month it finishes.
- Every instalment, counted. Track paid vs remaining instalments for each card and loan, and see what's due next.
- See the month your cash frees up. The 12-month forecast shows your balance stepping up when an EMI ends.
- Nothing to link. You type the numbers from your statement. We never ask for your card number, PIN or OTP.

FAQ
Is a 0% EMI really free?
Often not completely. Many 0% plans add a processing fee, VAT is charged on that fee, and some shops only offer 0% EMI at full price while giving a cash discount to people who pay upfront. Add those together before you decide.
How much extra does a 36-month EMI cost?
It depends on the rate. In our example, ৳60,000 at 17% a year (reducing balance) over 36 months costs ৳17,010 in interest — about 28% more than the price — before any processing fee or VAT.
Why does my card limit drop after converting to EMI?
Most banks block the outstanding EMI principal against your credit limit and release it gradually as you pay each instalment. Plan your other card spending around the reduced limit.
Where do I find my bank's real EMI rates and fees?
In your bank's Schedule of Charges (SOC) and the EMI terms for your card. Ask for the annual interest rate, whether it is flat or reducing, the processing fee, VAT, and the early-settlement fee — in writing.
